I started with the premise that no amount of exercise or food eating plan would help with long-term fitness or weight goals unless you first had a mental plan and…

Below is a list of all the speakers we just had at Momentum 2021 and how to find out more about them. Many are fantastic coaches, authors or consultants and I expect a lot of attendees will want to consider hiring at least one of them.

If they are Medium writers, I’ve also linked their name to their Medium author account. Give them a follow.

(And yes, recordings of the sessions will be up soon)

The New York Times reported that to lose fat with exercise, you should exercise 6 hours a week; doing less than this didn’t lead to fat loss. The researchers concluded, in part, that:

Therefore, the results of the present study suggest current recommendations for exercise to promote weight loss may be inadequate and should be closer to 300 min·wk−1 to overcome the approximately 1000-kcal·wk−1 compensatory response that accompanies exercise. [Source]

Six hours a week is a lot of exercise. If you are training for an Olympic distance triathlon or for a marathon, then you’ll probably do that or more. …

Here’s some safe-for-public pillow talk. Drifting off to sleep, Sarah asked me if I thought I would have the same career if we weren’t together.

We both agree, obviously no.

I’m familiar with the idea of a couple supporting each other and through that support one or both of them being able to achieve things they otherwise wouldn’t.

We do that. But that’s not really the thing she was getting at.

The thing is that we each took the other person’s job.

When we met in 2003, I was an engineering leader turning into an engineering manager, at O’Reilly and then as the head of engineering at Odeo where Twitter was born. …

IMO, people are overly obsessed with Medium’s payment algorithm, which makes sense if you are trying to make a living here. But I think focusing too much attention to last month’s payment means it’s easy to stop investing in bigger wins.

On the flip side, sometimes it’s just fun to experiment here without any pressure. I do a bit of both and so I have a hard time sorting out what I’m doing for fun and what I’m doing for business. …

I’d like to extend a free invitation to an event we’re throwing on January 2nd.

We’re bringing together three communities of experts for a new type of event. It’s a festival of sorts, to celebrate and share what it takes to succeed at anything and everything.

It’s not too early for you to start thinking about 2021. What are you going to do to be the best version of yourself? To be as successful and happy as you can be? To bring your maximum positive impact to the world?

We want to help. …

Analyzing Habit Tracking Behavior from Coach.me

Every year I go through our data from Coach.me to see what habits people have started tracking and what habits they’ve stopped tracking. The result is a snapshot of what is becoming more popular and what is becoming less popular. This snapshot tends to change a lot more on a year to year basis than I’d expect.

Here’s last year’s for comparison.

Observations:

  • Top five habits didn’t change. That’s not what I was expecting.
  • The type of exercise people tracked did change, this is what I was expecting. For example people go to the gym less (-9) and run more (#3)
  • Set priorities for your day continues to move up our rankings, now up to 6th. This is what our habit coaches call a keystone habit. …
