An early lesson that I apply with mixed success: sometimes the hype comes way too early. I learned that about podcasting in 2005. If you were a podcast lifer, then 2005 was a fine time to get started. But if you were just an entrepreneur trying to blitz scale some venture capital then that was a terrible time to get into podcasting.
