Exactly.

The part of @Shaft’s piece that really got me was the quote about “diversity is important but we can’t lower the bar.”

I don’t see enough people talk about raising the bar with diversity. I have a diversity policy for hiring for three reasons: because it’s right, because it’s fun, because it works.

Right is obvious. Fun is just my experience of finding a diversity of outlooks to be stimulating. But I’m always hesitant to tell the truth about works because I’m afraid it comes off as too predatory.

Diversity policies are an arbitrage opportunity against hidden bias. You can hire better people, with more untapped potential, free of entitlement, with less competition for their services. So basically, it’s the opposite of that Twitter VPE’s lower-the-bar fear.

Plus diverse groups make better decisions.

The hiring opportunities created by industry bias are a capitalists dream scenario.

But if you read that on it’s own, how would you react? I can’t quite articulate it — but it does sound distasteful. I try not to say anything close to it unless I have room to give other context.

“Societal error in white bro’s favor, he collects 200 10x engineers.”

Hopefully obv., I’m being a little cynical here. It’s everyone’s job to do what they can to make the world a better place. If some of those things are win-win, then all the better.
