I don't think this historical perspective on pubs is exactly right, although I think we are both operating from memory.

My take is that the success of high volume publications was always a sign of illness at Medium. It meant a publication could publish every article that was submitted to them and then the algorithm would figure out what people should read. Essentially, high volume pubs are a sign that pubs are not acting as curators.
