I think you’re probably being playful. But I think the last set of bonuses we did (three summers ago?) was a huge mistake. For all the complaining people do now about their earnings, at least what we pay now is congruent with Medium staying in business. So that’s something writers can count on, even if it’s that we are reliably unreliable. That’s still a form of reliability and so writers can make plans accordingly. When we pay in a way that is disconnected from Medium staying in business we set expectations that we won’t be able to match in the future. As we saw in August, reduced payments feels deeply personal to writers. But those prior payments were part of a system that was leading Medium toward bankruptcy and that's also something nobody wants.
