I wasn’t joking and I was pretty shocked. As you say, both sides are notable, both that you could never avoid reading male protagonists and that it’s possible to avoid reading female protagonists.

But when I think about it I’m pretty sure I’m right.

  • Glass Menagerie has a male protagonist although the women are more memorable.
  • Wizard of Earthsea is about a boy although written by a woman.
  • Dune, LoTR, Foundation trilogy all have male leads.

I read a lot more than that. But I just can’t think of anything.

Golden Compass is the series that seems most like something I would have read.
