I’m glad you asked this question — I’ve been wondering about it as well.

After writing a few posts, I took a look at someone who writes every day to see how long their posts are: Fred Wilson at avc.com.

He’s popular in my world and every post is quality in that they are all useful and helpful in some way.

But I think the real debate is depth. Even Fred’s longest post from last week was only a 2 minute read (I dropped it into a Medium draft).

It doesn’t always take a lot of depth to make an important point well.

And there’s another breezy style of blog post that I’ve enjoyed reading in the past where you try to make all the paragraphs really short. It’s almost like jumping from sound-bite sound-bite. I tried that with this post (mostly single sentence paragraphs).

Writing that way made the post much easier to write.

Another observation I had about single-idea posts is that often my more in-depth posts were too in-depth. I think they would have been better broken out into multiple posts.

So all of the above is to say — if you’re going to write every day, I do think you can bring the scope of a post down to a manageable level.

Part of your question was about that decision — is this ready to post?

I try to force myself to follow a quality process — make a point, give it a good headline, run it through a grammar checker.

With that process, it’s possible for it to be unpopular but hard for it to be low quality. Does that make sense?

For me, I get most tripped up by popularity. If one post does really well, I start to think every post I write has to do that well.

Anyway, that’s my jumble of thoughts on this issue. I’m still trying to figure it out myself.
