One thing people miss about where the subscription money goes is that we cover the cost of acquiring readers and subscribers. The main cost is in the form of cloud hosting services and that alone eats up 25% of the base $5. If you are being brutally capitalistic about it, the reason we host free stories is because they end up as marketing surface area for the subscription. So cloud costs are essentially a marketing expense and there would be no readers or subscriber money if we didn’t pay. But I wouldn’t call us brutally capitalistic, more capitalist aware. People who work at Medium always come for the mission first. So that’s not the only reason we do it that way.
