I do think there is a place for mutual engagement, just not when it is purely reciprocal for the purpose of making money.

For example, how do you improve the quality of your writing? The best way I know is to get feedback. How do you get feedback? The best way I know is through reciprocal relationships. I know whenever I send something for review that I'm asking a favor and will likely get asked a favor in return.

But that's engagement for the purpose of increasing quality. That's healthy and in line with what we are trying to incentivize.
