Re: fine print. Legalese is always inherently scary to read and almost never even makes sense without asking for clarification about what one party is intending.

So Medium wants license rights to derivative works. And almost certainly that means innocuous derivatives like blurbing an article on Facebook. It 100% doesn't mean they will sell the film rights to your article as some commenters asked about. But that's the thing, it's good to ask. It's not good to jump on an amateur interpretation and try to turn it into a controversy. I think that's part of what is happening right now.
